Sigiriya - The Lion Rock Fortress

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress located in the Matale District. Rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding jungle, it was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century CE. The site features stunning frescoes, mirror walls, and the famous lion paw entrance. Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited landmarks in Sri Lanka.

History

King Kashyapa chose Sigiriya as his capital in 477 CE after seizing the throne from his father, King Dhatusena. The rock fortress served as a royal palace and a military stronghold. After Kashyapa's defeat, the site was converted into a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. The Sigiriya frescoes, depicting celestial maidens, remain some of the finest examples of ancient Sri Lankan art.
